We are looking forward to your visit to Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution at Yorktown. Please read these Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to find information that will help you make the most of your time and ensure you have a wonderful visit.
Days & Hours of Operation
Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s days.
For the safety of our visitors and living-history interpreters, we may close outdoor areas during adverse weather conditions. If a closure is needed, visitors can check our website and social media to learn about operational changes.
Even when outdoor areas are closed during inclement weather, the museums offer indoor galleries, exhibits and award-winning films that remain open year-round 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s days.
Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown galleries, exhibits and award-winning films are open year-round 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s days.
During the winter, our outdoor living-history areas offer reduced hours.
Allow a minimum of two hours to view a film, walk through the galleries and visit the outdoor living-history areas. Three to four hours should be allotted to see all that each gallery has to offer, view two or more films and talk with living-history interpreters in the outdoor areas. If buying tickets on site, please complete your purchase by 4:30 p.m.

Getting Here & Getting Around
Jamestown Settlement is on Route 31 South, next to the Colonial Parkway and Historic Jamestowne, and just 10 minutes from the restored area of Colonial Williamsburg.

From Richmond:
- Take I-64 to Exit 234 (Lightfoot).
- Turn right onto Route 199.
- Follow Route 199 for eight miles.
- Turn right at the second traffic light onto Jamestown Road (Route 31 South).
From Hampton Roads:
- Take I-64 west to Exit 242A.
- Follow Route 199 for five miles.
- Turn left at the fourth traffic light onto Jamestown Road.
All:
- Drive four miles on Jamestown Road.
- Turn left at the Jamestown Settlement sign, onto Route 359.
- Turn right into the museum parking lot.
Colonial Parkway Construction
In 2023, the Federal Highway Administration and the National Parks Service began work to restore the 90-year-old Colonial Parkway infrastructure. Expect lane closures and detours intermittently on sections of the Colonial Parkway. The project is slated to last less than three years, ending in time for the celebration of the nation's 250th birthday in 2026. For information, visit the National Park Service website.
No, these are two different and distinct museums. Jamestown Settlement is a living-history museum of 17th-century Virginia history and culture. Historic Jamestowne is the original site of America's first permanent English colony, founded in 1607.
Jamestown Settlement
Jamestown Settlement opened April 1, 1957, as Jamestown Festival Park, commemorating the 350th anniversary of Jamestown’s founding. The name changed to Jamestown Settlement in 1990.
The museum features expansive permanent exhibition galleries, including artifacts, interactives and films, and interpretation in outdoor full-scale re-creations of a Paspahegh town, English ships and a palisaded fort. Read more.
The museum is administered by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, an educational agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
Historic Jamestowne
Historic Jamestowne is the original site of America's first permanent English colony, including James Fort, founded in 1607.
Historic Jamestowne is jointly administered by the Colonial National Historical Park (part of the National Park Service) and Preservation Virginia (on behalf of Jamestown Rediscovery).
Two tickets are required to visit all of Historic Jamestowne.
Historic Jamestowne, located on Jamestown Island, features a visitor center with exhibits and a theater presentation, original structures dating to the 17th century, ongoing archaeology, living-history programs and the Voorhees Archaearium Archaeology Museums. The site also includes a reconstructed Glasshouse with glass-blowing demonstrations.
Tours are offered by Jamestown Rediscovery historians and archaeologists and Colonial National Historical Park rangers.

The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown is located on Route 1020, at the edge of Yorktown and near Yorktown Battlefield, just 20 minutes from the restored area of Colonial Williamsburg.

- Take I-64 to Exit 247.
- Turn left onto Route 143.
- Turn left at the first traffic light, onto Route 238.
From Hampton Roads:

All:
- Follow Route 238 for three miles.
- Bear to the left onto Route 1020.
- The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown is one mile on the right.

Parking is free at Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. The distance between the two museums is approximately 20 miles depending on your route.
Yes, there are dedicated areas for free bus and RV parking while visiting each museum.
At Jamestown Settlement, the weight rated lot for heavy vehicles is located in the bus loop along Jamestown Road. When visiting the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, heavy vehicles should proceed to the parking lot near the re-created farm amenities pavilion.
Yes. This PDF contains a color map of both Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Please download the PDF to your mobile device to use when touring the museums. Printed maps are not available.
Yes, all areas of the museums, except on board the ships, are wheelchair accessible. Both museums have wheelchair-accessible restrooms, water fountains and automatic doorways with one-touch controls. Elevators are available in the Robert V. Hatcher, Jr., Rotunda to access the second-floor gallery for events or special exhibitions.
Please note, inside the museums and outdoor areas, there are brick, gravel and crushed shell paths which vary in evenness.
A limited number of strollers, scooters and wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests are encouraged to bring their own mobility device to assist with navigating the museums.
Yes, we have several accommodations that all visitors might find helpful:
- Open-captioned versions of films are shown daily.
- Sign-language interpreters are available with a minimum of two weeks’ advance notice.
- Trained service animals assisting visitors are allowed throughout the museums.
- Family restrooms are located at both museums, and diaper-changing stations are available in both men’s and women’s restrooms.
- Light levels in the museum theaters and gallery exhibits vary in brightness. Some films with special effects contain flashing lights and loud sounds.
- If someone in your party needs a sensory break space or quiet space, please ask a staff member for an appropriate location.
- Both museum cafés have vegetarian and gluten-free offerings.
- If you are unable to reach an item in our museum shops, our staff will be happy to assist you.
- If you need first aid while at either museum, please alert visitor services staff or security.
Tickets & Discounts
Yes, most of our tickets can be purchased online in advance. All of our tickets and current prices are listed on our website. Learn more.
No, a printed ticket isn't required. You can show a copy of your confirmation email on your mobile device when you arrive at the museum. Most ticket orders can be found with either your confirmation number or the phone number associated with your online purchase.
Yes! We have helpful visitor services staff located in the lobby of Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown who will help you with your ticket purchases.
For individual tickets, we are happy to take major credit cards (except American Express) for online purchases. If you are buying a ticket on site, payments can be made with a major credit card (except American Express), debit card or cash. Learn more about the tickets we offer.
For group ticket purchases for 15 people or more, please read the information about booking a guided group visit, field trip or self-guided visit.
For dining, all major credit cards, debit cards, cash and checks made payable to the Jamestown Settlement Café or the 1781 Café by Aromas are accepted.
No, since our museums, Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, are not a part of the National Parks Service, we cannot honor your National Park pass for museum admission. A separate ticket purchase is required.
Both our museums are very near National Park sites. Historic Jamestowne is 1.5 miles from Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center is 1.6 miles from the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.

You have up to six months from the date of purchase to use your admission ticket to Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. If you are unable to use it within six months, please email tickets@jyf.virginia.gov to inquire about a refund.
If your visit extends to multiple days and you want to experience the Historic Triangle, there are ticket options that offer value and flexibility.
You can purchase a 7-day ticket, a combination ticket to both Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, plus experience year-round adventure with an Annual Pass or tickets with other area attractions.
Tickets
Yes, visitors age 62 years and older receive a 10% discount on the cost of a single museum general admission ticket. This offer is only available on site. Please present your photo ID at purchase.
Special event, combination and multiday tickets cannot be discounted and a senior discount cannot be combined with any other offer or coupon.
Dining
The Jamestown Settlement Café offers a 10% discount to seniors age 62 years of age and older. This discount cannot be combined with any other dining offer or coupon.
Military Daily Admission Discount
Yes, active duty, reserve, veteran and retired military personnel and up to three direct family members with military identification receive a 10% discount on the cost of single-museum, general admission tickets. This offer is only available on site.
Visitors requesting the military discount should present their military ID (ages 10 and older) or discharge papers if they no longer have a military ID.
Special ticketed events, combination and multiday admission tickets cannot be discounted and a military discount cannot be combined with any other offer or coupon.
Military Free Admission Days
Free museum admission to active duty, reserve, veteran and retired military personnel and up to three direct family members with military identification is available on Yorktown Day, October 19 (historical observance); Veterans Day, November 11; Jamestown Day, May 13 (historical observance); and Memorial Day. No, we do not offer discounts on museum admission for teachers to Jamestown Settlement or the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.

Teachers, who are local residents of James City County, York County and the City of Williamsburg, receive free admission with proof of residency.
Yes, the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation offers free admission to those receiving food assistance (SNAP Benefits) through a partnership with Museums for All, a signature access program of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Association of Children’s Museums.

A group visit is a party of 15 or more people who use a single form of payment for admission. The group can tour the museums on their own or make a reservation for a guided tour led by a trained museum educator.

Yes, we encourage all groups to pre-order meals for pickup at Jamestown Settlement or the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Pre-ordered group meals are picked up in the café for dining in the café or on the patio.

Yes, there are cafés at both the Jamestown Settlement and American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.
Both the Jamestown Settlement Café and 1781 Café by Aromas have cozy, family-friendly indoor dining areas as well as outdoor spaces. They are open during museum hours and can accommodate intimate gatherings and larger groups.
Cash, debit cards, major credit cards and checks made payable to the Jamestown Settlement Café and the 1781 Café are accepted for dining.
Bottled water and a variety of sweet and salty snacks are available in the museum shops. Guests also can purchase beverages at vending machines on site.

Yes, you are welcome to bring your meal and dine in the available picnic areas at both Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.
We ask that food purchased offsite be enjoyed only at the picnic areas. Food and drink purchased at the Jamestown Café or the 1781 Café by Aromas may be enjoyed indoors or on the outdoor patios adjoining the cafés.
Food and drink, either purchased at the cafés or brought from home, are not allowed in the galleries. Only water is allowed in the outdoor living-history areas.
Yes! The museum shops at Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown are open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s days, and offer a selection of museum souvenirs, reproductions, books and collectibles.

Pets & Service Animals
No, pets are not allowed at either Jamestown Settlement or the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, including the outdoor living-history areas.
Sometimes we are confused with Historic Jamestowne, a part of the Colonial National Historical Park, which does allow pets in some areas. However, Jamestown Settlement does not allow pets.
Trained service animals assisting visitors are welcome throughout the museums. Please read the FAQ below regarding service animals for more information.
Yes, trained service animals assisting visitors are welcome throughout the museums.
Service animals should be distinguished with a vest or other appropriate signage in order to alert visitors and staff that they should avoid creating distractions while your animal is working.
Service animals are expected to behave appropriately and not interfere with the experience of other visitors or with the staff and animals that work in the outdoor living-history areas.
Should your service animal relieve themselves in the outdoor living-history areas, please dispose of it in the nearest trash receptacle.
Yes, we have domesticated animals that work in the outdoor living-history areas of both museums. Please do not chase or disturb them.
Our chickens and farm cat, Rochambeau (aka "Beau") do important tasks and are often too busy working to answer questions. However, the human staff welcome your questions.
In addition to domesticated animals, our museums are near natural areas that wild animals call home. It is not uncommon to see an osprey or bald eagle flying overhead or fishing in the nearby river. Please help us keep their habitat clean and wild. Do not venture off the paths or beyond fences, and do not throw trash, food or other items into the river or natural areas.

Yes, we are committed to exploring our shared history in an environment that is welcoming and respectful. We ask that visitors:
• Be open to learning in a shared space.
• Create an environment free of harassment and threatening behavior.
• Engage in dialogue without discriminatory language.
• Show respect to staff, fellow visitors and museum property.
We will not tolerate racist, sexist or homophobic comments, vandalism, physical contact or harassment of any kind at our museums. Abusive, inflammatory and discriminatory actions or language toward museum staff or other people is prohibited as well as clothing that contains offensive or abusive language or symbols.
Guests who cannot comply with our code of conduct will be asked to leave museum.
No, for everyone’s safety and enjoyment, the operation of drones and other unmanned aerial devices or systems on museum property and grounds is prohibited.
No, for everyone’s safety, open and concealed carry firearms are prohibited according Virginia Executive Order 50, issued October 15, 2015. Other weapons, including but not limited to, explosives, lasers and hazardous chemicals and materials are prohibited at Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.
No, the use of motorized and unpowered bicycles, scooters (not used for mobility issues), skateboards, hoverboards and Segways is prohibited within the museums and outdoor living-history areas.
Both of the museums are located near beautiful natural areas with cycling trials. Visitors often arrive to the museums on bicycles and we provide bike racks for cyclists.
Smoking, including electronic devices, is prohibited in the museum galleries and outdoor living-history areas. Designated smoking areas and receptacles are located in front of the museums.
Most things, but not everything.
We encourage you to take photos as you experience the exhibits and outdoor areas however there are a few items we ask that you not photograph. Look for “no photography” sign in the lower-right corner of gallery exhibit cases to find where photography is prohibited. Unless otherwise posted, museum guests may take pictures and video recordings for personal, non-commercial use.
For the safety and comfort of other visitors, flash photography, use of tripods, monopods, selfie sticks or other similar equipment is prohibited.
Video recording of the museum film presentations is prohibited.
No, commercial photography, including family portraits or wedding photography is prohibited at the museums without obtaining approval in advance.
Please direct commercial and media requests for filming and photography to the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Media Relations office.
No, the distribution or display of printed materials of any type unrelated to museum programming or the agency’s educational mission is not allowed at either Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.
No, solicitation, sales or advertising at the museums is prohibited unless approved in advance.

Yes, if we find an item at the museum and cannot locate the owner, we will hold the item for 30 days. If you have lost something during your visit, please contact our visitor services department to claim your possession.
