In the 18th century, surveyors like Peter Jefferson and George Washington explored new areas using tools to measure distances, find angles and establish boundaries of land. The information they collected was essential for making accurate and reliable maps, planning new settlements, and dividing and distributing land. Land surveying had a profound impact on the growth of the nation and on the lives of the people who lived on these lands.
