Williamsburg, Va. – Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown offer travelers an escape from the modern day with an experiential trip to America’s past in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The two dynamic history museums, conveniently located near Williamsburg, Virginia, tell the story of the nation’s beginnings and the cultural convergence of Virginia Indian, English and West Central African cultures through immersive gallery exhibits and films and interactive living history in outdoor re-created settings.
An array of special exhibitions, events and programs are presented throughout the year, including programs commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
At Jamestown Settlement, visitors can explore re-creations of a Paspahegh town with reed-covered dwellings, an English fort depicting the 1610-14 time period, and board one of the three square-rigged ships that brought English colonists to Virginia in 1607 to try activities, such as shaping a dugout canoe, trying on armor and steering with a ship’s tiller.
At the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, examine a re-created Continental Army encampment to learn about the life of a soldier and help with chores at the re-created Revolution-era farm, based on a real-life 18th-century family.
