Mary Perth - A Journey of Faith and Freedom (c.1740-1813)

Mary Perth’s life journey, from enslavement in Virginia, to following the British during the Revolutionary War, to starting over in Canada and Africa, shows both resilience and struggle. She and her family escaped slavery in America, but they continued to face hardship, poverty, and discrimination in the new communities they tried to build. Her story reminds us that freedom did not mean equality, and that even after escape, formerly enslaved people carried the weight of injustice throughout their lives.
