William "Billy" Flora - Hero of Great Bridge (c.1755-c.1820))

In December, 1775, Billy’s courage was put to the test. He left the loyalist-controlled town of Norfolk to join his fellow militiamen near Great Bridge, Virginia, where the British royal governor, Lord Dunmore, and his troops had set up a fort with over 200 soldiers. The militiamen built makeshift shelters and were waiting for reinforcements to help them attack the Dunmore’s loyalists. Billy was charged with sentry duty to keep guard over the Great Bridge.

However, the British launched an unexpected attack before reinforcements could arrive. While many of his fellow soldiers retreated, Flora chose to stay and fight. Even though the British outnumbered the patriots, Flora continued to resist. He fired his musket and remained in place. Some accounts suggests that amid the battle, Flora pried planks of wood from the bridge, creating a gap that slowed the British troops’ advance. The patriots soon won the day.

Flora’s actions at Great Bridge were a turning point in the war. The patriot victory forced the British to retreat from Virginia, and they would not return until the very end of the Revolution in 1781. Flora went on to serve in many more battles as a soldier in the Continental Army, including the important Siege of Yorktown. But it was his bravery at Great Bridge that truly made him a hero.
