Deborah Sampson - Soldier in Disguise (1760-1827)

Deborah Sampson is best known for disguising herself as a man to serve as a soldier in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. While many women serve in the American armed forces today, Sampson is one of the earliest examples of a woman serving in a combat role. She was one of only a few women to receive a full pension for fighting in the American Revolution, and she is also one of the first women to go on a speaking tour across the United States. Deborah Sampson defied social norms to serve her country and pave the way for future generations of women in the military.
