Cockacoeske - Queen of the Pamunkey (d.1686)

 

Cockacoeske was a prominent female leader who served as the weroansqua (chief) of the Pamunkey for thirty years, from 1656 to 1686. Her ability to forge and maintain an alliance with the English while protecting her tribe’s interests demonstrated her strong leadership qualities and strategic thinking. Cockacoeske’s efforts were pivotal in ensuring the survival and resilience of the Pamunkey people during a period marked by external pressure and societal change.
